The 28th Annual Technology Ireland Awards Broadcast


Technology Ireland Software Skillnet were delighted to sponsor the Women in Tech Company Initiative of the Year Award for the 28th Annual Technology Ireland Awards. The Women in Technology Award recognises companies that have demonstrated a strong commitment to attracting, retaining and developing women across its workforce. The awards broadcast took place on Thursday November 24th. 


Women are under-represented in the technology sector with only 19% of women employed in technology companies or in ICT roles in other industries. A strong representation of women is needed to increase the participation of women in senior roles and on boards, to ensure an adequate pool of talent, to foster innovation and to connect with female consumers who make the majority of buying decisions. Increasing the number of women in technology has the potential to boost company performance and foster more inclusive workplaces.


Companies are increasingly seeing the value of hiring women returners to drive competitiveness, innovation and multi-generational perspectives and many have ambitious goals to increase the number of women in their organisations.


There are still a number of barriers to women entering or re-entering the ICT workforce. If the sector is to connect with this untapped pool of talent, new routes, new approaches and new types of support programmes are needed to overcome barriers to entry and to enable this highly qualified and experienced group to show how fast they can make a valuable contribution to organisations. 


Since 2016 Technology Ireland Software Skillnet have supported over 200 women have taken part in our two flagship programmes, Women ReBOOT and Women TechSTART. Through our programmes, over 90% of participants progress to full-time, sustainable roles.  During Covid-19 all programmes were rapidly transitioned to an online format enabling over 60 participants to continue and graduate.


Women In Tech Company Initiatives like those from this years’ finalists Citi, Workhuman, Fidelity, McAfee and VMWare are also crucial to increase the participation and/or support the development of women in technology.

VMware were the worthy winners of this years Women In Tech Company Initiative of the Year Award. 

Speaking about winning the award, Ciara McAdam O’Connell -Senior Business Analyst & VMinclusion Ireland POD Co-lead said "We’re honoured to win this award and for the recognition it gives to all those who strive for diversity and inclusion at VMware Ireland."
